Character Review: Magik

Illyana Rasputin, known to her fellow X-Men as Magik, is both a powerful mutant and the sorcerer supreme of Limbo. So let's see what brings to the Uncanny X-Men!

With 3 threat, 5 health on both her healthy and injured side, size 2, medium mover with 3 physical and energy defense, with 4 mystical is pretty close to the average stat line for her threat level.

Soulsword serves as Magik's builder and it's a strong one. 5 dice with wild pierce on a mystic attack is something a lot of other 3 threat wish they had access to. Being a mystic attack is nice as a fair amount of models have lower mystic defenses.

Bolts of Osthur is a range 4 gainer with 4 dice that diversifies Magik's arsenal and can help her build power while staying away from the action.

Darkchylde serves as Magik's spender. With range 3 and 6 dice at the cost of 4 power, at face value it doesn't seem very efficient, but you get to count failures on both rolls which makes this attack a lot more threatening. After the attack resolves the target gains Bleed and Incinerate which is a nice benefit to the attack.

Limbo Step is, in my opinion, Magik's key defining superpower. It allows her to extend her reach both for offensive and scenario driven activations. The flexibility of the ability lets you leverage her kit significantly better.

Her last superpower is Sorcerer Supreme of Limbo. This superpower gives her some additional survivability against Mystic attack and sometimes even gain power. It doesn't make her much more resilient than her stat line suggests, but it is still a nice power to have.

Overall, Magik serves as one of X-Men's most mobile affiliated model. She can weave in and out of the action to chase an extract holder of get back to safety after attacking. Her mobility also gives her an important scenario presence as she can shift between points fairly easily, but she is susceptible to being overexposed and then taken out since she remains somewhat fragile.

Thanks for taking the time to read this piece and as always, don't forget to have fun!
